FAQ

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a supportive and solution-focused approach to dealing with emotional and psychological issues. Counselling offers a safe, private and confidential setting to discuss the challenges you may be facing. As each client is different, Helen will work with you to determine the changes you would like to see, or the destructive patterns you wish to overcome. Though counselling may include psychotherapy, counselling is largely focused on coaching, educating, and discussing issues.

What is Psychotherapy?

According to the CRPO, “The practice of psychotherapy is the assessment and treatment of cognitive, emotional or behavioural disturbances by psychotherapeutic means, delivered through a therapeutic relationship based primarily on verbal or non-verbal communication.” The essence of psychotherapy is to build a strong therapeutic alliance that will allow for the exploration and understanding of the challenges you are facing. In a warm, non judgmental, and caring approach, Helen will help you to gain insight and overcome problematic thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

What is Consulting?

Helen provides consulting in situations where professional expertise is required. In some cases, she may act as a liaison between parties.

What are Assessments?

A Psychological Assessment is often recommended to assess an individual’s overall psychological functioning, taking into account personal history, physical health, past traumas, and current difficulties. An assessment will usually involve a clinical interview, as well as the use of diagnostic tools to objectively assess an individual’s functioning. An assessment will determine any diagnoses, if applicable, as well as recommending a course of treatment.

What about Fees?

Services are not covered by OHIP. However, in many cases, fees are covered by extended healthcare benefits. An individual’s auto insurance company may also cover the cost of counselling and assessments if they have been involved in an accident. Contact Helen if you are interested in counselling, psychotherapy, or assessments.

Associates

In the event that Helen is not able to see you in her practice (for whatever reason,) She will be happy to meet with you for a 50 min consultation in order to refer you to another therapist or to make any necessary recommendations. Helen works with a number of other therapists to whom she can refer you.
